Follow Basic Food Safety Practices Course Mawson Lakes North Adelaide


The course applies to individuals who work as a Food Handler Level 1 Food Safety Course, particularly for the health and community sectors. This course is designed for workers that prepare, provide and serve food to vulnerable people such as the elderly, children and babies, pregnant women, people with medication conditions, immune deficiencies and/or allergies primarily.

These staff often work in Early Childhood, Aged Care, Disability Support, Respite Care, Community and Home Care, Meals on Wheels, Maternity hospitals, Psychiatric hospitals, Same day establishments for chemotherapy and rental dialysis services and Hospital Catering. The legislation states:

“Food businesses that process or serve potentially hazardous food for hospital patients, aged care recipients, children in child care centres and vulnerable people receiving other services will generally fall within the requirements of this Standard, provided the food is intended for six or more vulnerable persons. This Standard also applies to delivered meals organisations that process potentially hazardous meals intended for six or more vulnerable persons.”

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge of food safety and hygiene matters to prevent contamination of food that could result in a food-borne illness with specific modules on the childcare and aged care sectors. You will also learn about your obligations when working in a food safety role in accordance with legislation, regulations and workplace policies and procedures.

  • Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

    • Refresher online time of at least 210 minutes

    • Online assessment of at least 120 minutes

  • Online study:  Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

    • Industry workplace or an industry-realistic simulated environment

    • Workplace first aid kit including food-grade band aids/ bandages

    • Garbage receptables

    • Hand wash teaching aid solution and uv light

    • Personal protective equipment (specific to the industry)

    • Cleaning equipmentHandwashing facilities e.g. designated handwashing sink, antiseptic liquid soap, warm running water, disposable paper towel or an air dryer

    • Commonwealth, state/territory and local government food safety regulatory documents (preferably in plain english)

    • Current organisational hygiene and food safety policies and procedures

    • Food service and food safety program policies and procedures

    • Food service facilities, equipment and utensils for handling, storing, and disposing of food and beverages

    • Monitoring equipment e.g., probe thermometers

    • Food and beverages

    Theory assessment: An online assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions.
